Deter, Detect, Defend, Control

The training covers a range of human behaviours that officers can expect, from  cooperative through to difficult and dangerous.  The core modules are common across all our operational safety courses reflecting their importance:

  • Professional mindset
  • Situational awareness and Dynamic Risk Assessments
  • Tactical Communication skills
  • Physical interactions
  • De-escalating verbal conflict
  • Recognising and Managing aggressive behaviour

We then include physical skills for the lawful use of force to defend yourself and others in a reasonable, proportionate, and necessary manner using passive and active counter-measures.

  • Arrest and Handcuffing
  • Controlling a person using Empty Hand Techniques
  • Controlling a person using OC spray
  • Defending yourself using a baton
  • Using a tactical flashlight to distract, disorientate and disable

CERT holds a current Chief Commissioners Approval for Prohibited Weapons (931-639-10W) for Electric Current Emitting Devices (Taser) Body Armour, Extendable Baton, and Oleoresin capsicum sprays

Want to host your own course in-house?

We devote a significant amount of time to non-escalation through highly effective and proven communication skills and physical actions such as stance, proxemics positioning that help keep interactions low.

When people are elevated, difficult, or dangerous you will be able to recognise this behaviour, de-escalate or safely disengage.

When time or circumstances are against you, we give you a range of skills and strategies to defend yourself or others safely and lawfully using Tactical Flashlights, OC Spray, Batons, or Empty hand techniques.

This course provides real world benefit by including a range of ‘everyday’ operational skills rarely taught such as entering property, approaching and knocking on a door, cover and conceilment, and safely interacting with vehicles.

Interleaved into the training are powerful techniques that can be put into immediate use, such as enhanced situational awareness, observation skills, safely interacting with vehicles and reporting & recovery from stressful interactions.

Discover what the NZ Police and more than 30 other Commonwealth, State and Local Government agencies already know – that CERT CIDT2 training is an investment in your staff that will make a positive, measurable, and noticeable difference.

Our training methodology emphasises integrated skills practice i.e events do not occur in isolation so as soon as the skill is learnt we combine related skills and then transition to practical role-plays as early as possible.

We teach the knowledge elements in a supportive classroom environment via presentations, demonstrations, real-world video analysis, and group discussions.

Then, we devote significant time to practicing the skills using adult learning principles.
